Club Membership

The Cruising Yacht Club is currently re-building numbers in the junior fleet with over 40 junior sailors enjoying the training, racing facilities and services the club provides as part of their membership each year.

Our junior members have their own dedicated Junior training programme which takes place on Saturday mornings which allows them to progress through the training fleets and then participate in Saturday afternoon racing programme.

Our junior members are an integral part of the club and mix freely with the senior members. This includes on water as well where a large proportion of our junior racing is in mixed fleets with more senior members. This mixing of junior and senior fleets builds a great deal of community within the club and this helps transfer the knowledge and experience gained from a lifetime of sailing.

Special Junior involvement races are conducted offering the chance to experience sailing in the senior fleets, be it on an Yvonne Catamaran or on the various Cruiser fleets.

Training

TCYC is a Sailing Australia, accredited training centre (Discover Sailing Centre) and provides a wide range of sail and powerboat training to our junior members from beginner sailing courses to advanced high performance training, and also includes powerboat courses such as the Recreational Skippers Ticket.

These training classes follow a well-structured and proven training scheme from very basic courses aimed at fun and participation right through to performance coaching for sailors who wish to compete at local, state, national and international levels. More details on the training provided please follow the link to the Discover Sailing Webpage http://www.discoversailing.org.au/ or go to our Training Page

The Club also runs a series of beginner sailing courses (subject to numbers) over the school holiday period for those individuals that cannot commit to full membership or cannot attend on Saturdays for the normal sail training and racing sessions.

To be a part of the sail training during the Sailing Season club membership fees must be paid at time of training registration.

Racing and Competition

Our weekly racing provides our sailors an opportunity to put their training into practice and compete against their peers in a safe and fun environment.

Our normal racing season is on Saturdays from October through to April each year.

Our sailors are also encouraged and supported by the club to represent at events all over the Perth area if they wish to do so and we also encourage the sailors to participate in regattas and training races throughout winter period

Fleets

TCYC has a proven pathway for young sailors to improve their racing skills from very small single-handed dinghies aimed at 7year old’s right up to right up to the higher performance Classes and Cruisers for older teens and adults.

Tackers & Minnows

New sailors from age 7 commence their training, using club owned Tacker training boats firstly aimed at gaining enjoyment from the sailing experience. The easy rigging style, stability and endurance of the boats mean our beginner sailors gain the confidence needed on the water before progressing into the Minnow.

The Minnow class has grown in popularity over recent years around WA with TCYC now boasting over 30 Minnows while smaller fleets exist at other clubs.  We also have club Minnows for hire for our newer sailors, with a strong re-sale market.

Puffin Pacer

We also offer the Puffin Pacer as a training boat for our older juniors& seniors interesting in sail training program. The Puffin Pacer is a 2 person dinghy, very stable and easy to rig allowing newer sailors the flexibility to learn the basics in a bigger, stable dinghy. The club owns 6 of these boats that can be rented for training or racing.

This boat is also used to provide holiday courses (subject to numbers) for non-members and school outdoor education programs.

Flying Ant

As our sailors broaden their skills they move into the Flying Ant Skiff class.

This is a two-person dinghy, with single trapeze, spinnaker and self-draining cockpit.  This is the ideal training class for young sailors to get a taste of fast pace of skiff sailing as they contemplate moving into more high performance classes.

This is a very light and fast boat that teaches all of the skill necessary to handle the larger higher performance dinghies whilst being small enough for the young sailors to handle. This is a great boat and the junior love the speed they can get up to in a good breeze.

29er Class

This fast paced, exciting class is for our most experienced junior sailors keen to obtain a taste of International fleet sailing and to most importantly – go fast!

Many of our junior sailors have gone on to represent not just TCYC, but WA and Australia at national and international events.  This boat represents the very best in high speed design and is the chosen youth training boat for those sailors who want to take their sailing to the very highest levels. It is super tough and durable so it also makes for a fantastic and fun boat for those sailors who just want to have fun on the weekends.

This boat is also one of the classes raced at the Australian Youth Championships where the best of the fleet are chosen to represent Australia in the Youth World Championships.

Laser Class

Our Laser fleet is currently building and we welcome new Laser Sailors to our club. Lasers are a single handed, 4.2m dinghy, with a single sail. These are suitable for both older Junior Sailors and Adults, using 4.7, Radial and Standard rigs.
