CATALPA CLASSIC
It is my great pleasure to announce the inaugural “Catalpa Classic” to be hosted by The Cruising Yacht Club.
The original idea brought to me by Ted Fuller has now, in conjunction with the Sailing Committee, blossomed into an actual race. The race will become an annual event run in early December and will be a ‘Drag Race’ from TCYC to FSC. The format for the race will simply be the fastest times in any fleet and the fastest first, second and third overall enabling different Divisions, and Classes within Divisions, to be able to set record times possibly every year. The race will begin from a handicap start which will keep most boats mystified on final results.
The name was derived from the American ship which spirited away the Irish-Fenian prisoners who had escaped from Fremantle Gaol, made their way to Rockingham and rowed out to the “Catalpa” making swift passage to America.
Our thanks go to Artist, Phil Williams, for making the perpetual trophy which is a sight to behold.
I wish you all fair sailing,
Rick Reghenzani
